Additional Trail Information

There are several top-notch trails to choose from around the Fontana area of the Great Smoky Mountains of NC. And a top choice by many is the Lakeshore Trail that spans 6.1 miles from Eagle Creek to Fontana Dam. Give yourself 2.5 to 3 hours for this point-to-point hike, and of course, allow 6 hours if you plan on going out-and-back from one trailhead. There are a couple of stellar campsites along this trail, and they are by the water, so making this a weekend adventure is a great plan.

The Lakeshore Trail has lots of switchbacks, has a 980-ft elevation gain, and is considered moderately challenging. There are some steep inclines and lots of water crossings, so keep this in mind when planning your hike. Unlike most of the hikes around here, dogs are not allowed, so please leave the pups at home.

This trail is also a fan favorite because of the water access, scenic and relaxing views, and its diverse array of flora and fauna.

Another way to stay and play on this trail is to rest a spell at the Fontana Village Resort, where year-round you can count on a sweet spot to lay your head, campground recreation for everyone in the family, and restaurants and shopping to help wrap up a full day of outdoor adventures.

Parking Facilities: While there is no entrance fee, a paid parking tag is required for those who park for longer than 15 minutes. You may purchase a daily, weekly, or annual tag online or at the visitor's center. For more information, please visit https://www.nps.gov/grsm/planyourvisit/fees
