About

The Cashiers Historical Society, located in the picturesque town of Cashiers, North Carolina, is a beacon of historical preservation and education. This esteemed organization is dedicated to preserving the rich heritage of the Cashiers Valley through various educational programs, events, and the meticulous maintenance of historical sites.

The Zachary-Tolbert House
One of the crown jewels of the Cashiers Historical Society is the Zachary-Tolbert House. This remarkable structure, virtually unaltered since its construction over 150 years ago, stands as a testament to the pioneer settlers of the Cashiers Valley. The house is a rare example of Greek Revival-style architecture in the region and offers visitors a glimpse into the past, showcasing the lifestyle and craftsmanship of the era.

The School House
Another significant historical site managed by the Cashiers Historical Society is the School House. Originally located on land owned by the Southern statesman Wade Hampton III, this authentic structure was established by Hampton’s three sisters to educate the children of the Valley. The School House has been carefully relocated and restored on the CHS campus, providing a tangible link to the educational history of the area.

Colonel John’s Cabin
Colonel John’s Cabin is one of the oldest surviving structures in the region. This historic cabin has been meticulously restored, preserving its original charm and historical significance. The cabin offers visitors a unique opportunity to step back in time and experience the early days of the Cashiers Valley. The survival and restoration of this structure are a testament to the community’s commitment to preserving its heritage.

The Dependency
In the 1920s, a building known as The Dependency was constructed near the site of the original Kitchen Dependency, which had been destroyed by fire. This structure adds another layer to the historical narrative of the Cashiers Valley, providing insight into the daily lives and resilience of its early inhabitants.

Faces and Places of Cashiers Valley Book
The Cashiers Historical Society is also proud to present the award-winning book, “Faces and Places of Cashiers Valley.” This comprehensive work, featuring the photography of Tim Barnwell, captures the historic places and stories of the people who have called this beautiful area home for many years. The book is a valuable resource for anyone interested in the history and culture of the Cashiers Valley.
