Located between Highlands & Cashiers, NC, Whiteside Mountain is designated a National Recreation Trail. The round-trip 2.5-mile loop is rated “difficult” due to some steep sections, but the rewards come again and again with overlook after glorious overlook as you reach and crest the summit.

Stunning Views from the Summit
The views from the summit of Whiteside Mountain are nothing short of breathtaking. On clear days, you can see east, south, and west, all the way to the Piedmont of South Carolina and Georgia. You’ll also catch a glimpse of the Chattooga River and the nearby Devil’s Courthouse mountain peak, whose name’s origin is still a mystery.

All manner of trees thrive in these forests – oaks, pines, maples, and mountain laurels on the way up, adding birch and beech into the mix on the way down. If you’re lucky, you may spot the endangered peregrine falcons that nest in the mountain’s cliffs.
The Highest Vertical Drop in the Eastern US

Directions to Whiteside Mountain
To get to the trailhead from Highlands, take US 64 about 5 miles to a right onto SR1680, and then follow the signs to the Whiteside Mountain Recreation Area. The journey to the trailhead is straightforward and well-marked, making it easy to find.
Parking is available at the trailhead for a self-service parking fee. The trail is open year-round and features a vault toilet for convenience.
