Special Recognition Awards
Tourism Hero of the Year: Eric Haggart
Drone Pilot. Storyteller. Community Servant.
Selected by Visit Smokies, Eric Haggart is honored for his contributions as a certified drone pilot and tourism ambassador. From elevating the region’s beauty through aerial videography to aiding in disaster relief during Hurricane Helene, Eric’s dedication exemplifies the spirit of the Smokies.
Each year, the Tourism Hero of the Year award recognizes someone who goes above and beyond in promoting and protecting the Smoky Mountain region. In 2024, that honor goes to Eric Haggart—a certified drone pilot whose work has not only elevated the tourism profile of Western North Carolina but also served his community in times of need.
Eric’s breathtaking aerial photography and videography have become a cornerstone of regional marketing, capturing the Smokies from perspectives most visitors only dream of. His footage has been featured in official campaigns, tourism guides, and promotional materials, painting an irresistible picture of the mountains’ majesty. His unique eye for landscape and light has helped attract countless visitors who were inspired by his soaring views of waterfalls, peaks, and winding forest trails.
But Eric’s work goes far beyond artistry. When Hurricane Helene struck, Eric didn’t hesitate—he volunteered his time, skills, and equipment to assist with search and rescue efforts, offering real-time drone support to emergency teams navigating the storm’s aftermath. He also delivered vital supplies directly to families in hard-hit areas, embodying the Smoky Mountain values of resilience, compassion, and community service.
His ability to blend innovation with impact—turning his passion for visual storytelling into both an economic driver and a lifeline—makes him a true tourism hero. Eric’s work reminds us that sometimes, the most powerful views come not just from above, but from someone who chooses to rise above.
Icon of the Year: Kim Albritton
Visionary Leader. Industry Trailblazer. Beloved Ambassador.
The Icon of the Year award honors a lifetime of contributions that have shaped the very identity of Smoky Mountain tourism. This year, Kim Albritton receives that distinction for her outstanding leadership and enduring legacy at the Great Smoky Mountains Railroad and beyond.
With a career spanning more than 35 years, Kim has become synonymous with the railroad experience in Bryson City. Since stepping into the role of Vice President and General Manager in 2005, she has steered the organization through transformative growth. Under her guidance, the GSMR attracted over 285,000 visitors in 2024 alone, earning national recognition as one of America’s Top 5 Scenic Railroads.
Her visionary approach has made the railroad more than a tourist attraction—it’s a cultural landmark. She’s championed events that blend storytelling, local history, and immersive experiences, bringing Appalachian and Cherokee heritage to life for passengers of all ages. From seasonal excursions to family-friendly rides like the Polar Express, Kim has helped create traditions for generations of visitors.
But Kim’s impact reaches far beyond the train tracks. As the owner of Railroad Realty of North Carolina and a dedicated member of multiple regional tourism and development boards, she has played a pivotal role in shaping Western North Carolina’s growth and visibility as a destination. Her strategic insight, tireless advocacy, and deep love for the region have elevated not just businesses—but entire communities.
Colleagues and locals alike speak of Kim with admiration, noting her approachable leadership style and unwavering commitment to the people behind the scenes. For Kim, tourism isn’t just about numbers—it’s about connection, authenticity, and sharing the magic of the Smokies with the world.
