Nestled in the scenic beauty of Haywood County, Buffalo Creek Vacations offers more than just a place to stay—it provides an experience. With charming mountain cabins, modern comforts, and breathtaking surroundings, this family-owned retreat allows guests to unwind in nature while enjoying the conveniences of home. Whether it’s hiking through lush forests, fishing in pristine streams, or simply soaking in the tranquility from a cabin porch, Buffalo Creek is the perfect place to reconnect with the great outdoors.
However, like many properties in Western North Carolina, Buffalo Creek Vacations faced significant challenges during Hurricane Helene. The storm brought destruction, but it also showcased the strength and resilience of the community.
Weathering the Storm
Hurricane Helene made a lasting impact on Buffalo Creek Vacations. According to Cheryl, the property’s owner, two cabins were damaged by fallen trees, requiring one roof to be replaced and another to be repaired. The Pigeon River—which runs in front of the property—rose more than 30 feet, washing out the driveway and sweeping away entrance signs. Flooding also destroyed hay fields and fences, adding to the list of costly repairs.
Tragically, the storm also claimed the lives of two bison and two horses from the property’s beloved animal residents. Despite these heartbreaking losses, Cheryl and her team remained focused on recovery.
Community Strength and Determination
In the aftermath of the hurricane, Buffalo Creek Vacations, like many other businesses, suffered a wave of cancellations—over 90 bookings were lost. But while the financial impact was severe, the community’s response was nothing short of inspiring.
“We couldn’t even get off our road,” Cheryl recalls. “A few other farmers and ourselves pulled together all the heavy equipment we had to clear one lane so we could reach the main road.” This spirit of cooperation and perseverance helped the property recover more quickly, proving the strength of Haywood County’s close-knit community.

Rebuilding and Moving Forward
Once power was restored—14 days after the storm—Buffalo Creek Vacations was back in business, welcoming guests to its mountain retreat once again. But Cheryl knew it wasn’t just about reopening; it was about making improvements for the future.
To better prepare for potential weather events, Buffalo Creek Vacations is relocating its main entrance driveway farther from the river to help prevent future flood damage. These proactive measures ensure that the property will continue to offer a safe and welcoming experience for guests, no matter what challenges nature presents.
A Message from Buffalo Creek Vacations
Today, Buffalo Creek Vacations is fully open and ready to welcome visitors once again. Reflecting on the experience, Cheryl shared her appreciation for the guests who reached out to check on the property and the animals during those difficult times.
“It made me realize that we are so much more than just a place to lay their heads when they visit the area.”
For Cheryl, this experience reinforced the unpredictability of running a mountain vacation rental. Her advice to other property owners? “Never take anything for granted—it could be gone in an instant. Keep your head up and just keep doing what you know how to do.”
