Stars & Stripes Celebration JULY 4th & Kids Patriotic Parade in Downtown Waynesville
The “Stars & Stripes Celebration” on Main Street in Downtown Waynesville continues after it began 23 years ago. Every July 4th holiday consists of the Waynesville Kiwanis Club volunteers lining the Main Street area with oversized American flags. Shops, galleries and restaurants are open all day. Sidewalk areas are filled with entertainment, musicians, Uncle Sam, & more along the Main Street area. The Haywood Community Band performs on courthouse lawn at 2pm.
July 4th Celebration At Fontana Village Resort
Fireworks and Fun In the Smokies
The barbeque pit is ready, the music line up is hot and the fireworks are aimed towards the sky for this year’s annual July 4th Celebration at Fontana Village Resort. This year’s celebration includes a full slate of activities and entertainment for the entire family. The activities schedule runs from Wednesday, July 2nd through Saturday, July 5th.
Live entertainment will be performing all weekend long from the resort’s Summer Music Series. Kicking off the musical line up is the Larry Barnett Duo on July 2nd. They will be playing a number of different instruments and styles of bluegrass music. Performance will be on the Wildwood Grill Porch from 7pm - 10pm. Then on July 3rd we welcome Unit 50 to Fontana!
Join us out on the Wildwood Sundeck for a show from Asheville's premier Classic Rock band. They will be playing music ranging from Jimi Hendrix to Kansas and Pink Floyd. Performance will be on the Wildwood Sundeck from 7pm -10pm or in the Events Hall in case of rain.
On July 4th Fast Gear will kick off the 4th in style! This local group from Robbinsville, NC will be playing an eclectic mix of country-rock favorites on the Wildwood Sundeck from 6:00pm – 8:30pm. Fast Gear is followed by the evening’s headliner, The Chillbillies, from Knoxville, TN beginning at 9:00pm. This Eastern Tennessee favorite will be playing a smoking hot blues-rock mix for the evening both before and after the fireworks. Their performance will be held in the Events Hall.
On July 5th Old Red Schoolhouse will round out the weekend’s celebration! Be sure to tune in to this Classic Country band featuring Steve Weams. Performance will be on the Wildwood Sundeck from 7pm - 10pm or in the Events Hall in case of rain.
Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians Hosts 39th Annual Pow Wow July 4-6
For almost four decades, the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians has hosted its annual Pow Wow on the Qualla Boundary and this year’s promises to be the best ever.
This year’s event, July 4-6, features world-champion dancers and drums competing for prizes. Vendors from across the country will offer food and arts and crafts items. The Pow Wow attracts thousands of visitors each year from all over the world.
Principal Chief Michell Hicks said, “Every summer we welcome dancers from around the country and Canada to join us for our annual Pow Wow and we are pleased to offer more than $60,000 in prize money for competition. We also welcome visitors to join us for this special event and to learn about contemporary Native culture.”
Dance competitions are open to participants in five groups and several categories including Traditional, Grass, Fancy, Straight, Jingle and Buckskin. There will also be Northern and Southern Singing prizes and a Hand Drum special. Age groups include “Golden Age” contestants (age 50+), men and women (age 18-49), teens (13-17), Junior (6-12), and tiny tots (under age 5). Specials include Men’s Fancy and Straight, Women’s Jingle, Old Style Fancy Shawl, Cowboy/girl and two Junior specials.
The Pow Wow opens at the Acquoni Expo Center (formerly Cherokee High School) Friday, July 4, at 5 p.m. with a grand entry at 7 p.m. and a fireworks show at 10:00 p.m. The event begins Saturday, July 5 at 10 a.m. and grand entry at 1 p.m. and 7 a.m., and Sunday, July 6, at gates open at noon with grand entry at 1 p.m. Admission is $10 per day with a weekend pass for $25.
Head staff includes Emcee Denis Bowen, Arena Director Gabe Bullock, Head Dance Judge Will Tushka and Head Singing Judge John Toineeta.
