Rock Lovers Rock
While stone-faced cliffs present challenges for climbers, the precious stones inside the mountain inspire many visitors. Gem mining in the Smokies is not only fun for the family, it's a very rewarding experience. Some of the world's largest sapphires were discovered near Canton. Rubies, garnets and sapphires are found in Cowee Valley near Franklin.
The Great Smoky Mountains offer hundreds of miles of trails to explore by foot, mountain bike, or horseback. This is the land of trails - trails to waterfalls, trails in the national park and national forests, and the longest of all trails, the Appalachian Trail.

Skyways & Byways
If you like to see the mountains from your car, the nation's most scenic highway is right here in the North Carolina mountains. The beautiful Blue Ridge Parkway features overlooks with breathtaking views and a host of trails, some designed especially for people with physical challenges.
The 50-mile Cherohala Scenic Skyway near Robbinsville and many other area roads offer motorists spectacular scenery.
